You are in command of your nation’s nuclear arsenal, and your mission is to decimate the civilian population of your enemy while protecting your own. Right now, I’m thinking it’s somewhere between “unsettled” and “pensive”, though the feeling is deeper than either of those would imply.ĭeveloped by Introversion (Darwinia, Uplink), DEFCON is a game that, according to its site, casts the player in the role of a military commander hidden deep underground in a fortified bunker. I still haven’t found quite the right word, but such is the nature of language we use words to approximate our thoughts in order to convey them, but when a thought is unfamiliar enough we don’t have the words to describe it. My next thought was “despair”, but again, not quite right. My first thought was “depressed”, although that’s not quite right DEFCON doesn’t make me sad. I’ve been having trouble putting a word to the feeling I get as I play DEFCON. In fact, it’s a quite enjoyable game it’s just not a fun game. This is purely the author’s musings about his feelings while playing DEFCON, and is in that sense entirely subjective.ĭEFCON is not a fun game, to me anyway, which is not to say it’s not a good game, or even an enjoyable game. If you like Diplomacy (which I'm assuming you do), I think you'd like this. This is not a review.

The game is best played in Multiplayer, in Diplomacy mode (part of the full game only), so one can make and break alliances. Silos are the toughest buildings, requiring three direct nuclear hits to be destroyed. When a Silo is in ICBM launch mode, it can strike any location in the world with a nuke, though it announces its location to all players in the game once it fires. They have unlimited AA weapons, so this is their default stance.

  • Missile Silos have two modes: A silo in air defense mode will engage any enemy ICBMS and aircraft that enter its range, prioritising ICBMs over aircraft.
  • They have the largest radar range out of everything in the game

They are also invisible to enemy radar.Ħ sea units make a fleet it is a good idea to mix carriers and battleships for well rounded defence.Īir units are deployed from airbases and carriers: Submarines can attack battleships very well and act as medium range missile platforms.Battleships have conventional weapons to be used against enemy aircraft and sea units, though they lack any nuclear weapons.Carriers carry fighters and bombers with nuclear payloads but are defenceless, save for depth charges against submarines. It is a six player game, though can be played short-handed with less "territories" or against AI players. There is also a point count for "collateral damage". You gain points for destroying cities and decimating the enemy populations and lose points for every one of your own civilians lost.
